MARC COPLAND

ZINC / MAY 7

Originally an alto saxophonist at the start of his performing career, Marc Copland switched to piano and never looked back. Extremely popular in Europe, where many of his albums were issued, U.S. audiences began to discover what they’ve been missing in recent years. Marc channels the lyricism and intimacy of Bill Evans as a ballad interpreter, while his driving, introspective post-bop compositions and superb chemistry with anyone who joins him on stage always makes for compelling, memorable music. A prolific recording artist with a large discography as a leader or co-leader, Marc’s most recent album is Someday, issued on his label InnerVoice Jazz. Marc’s band includes two seasoned veterans, sist John Hébert and drummer Billy Drummond. KD

RODNEY JONES

UNCLE CHEEF / MAY 10

Rodney Jones is a guitarist’s guitarist. He has played with a veritable who’s who of jazz legends, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne, Chico Hamilton, Larry Coryell, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter, James Brown – the list goes on. Rodney can play straight ahead, funk, groove, and can improvise using stream of consciousness ideas for a full hour as he does on The Infinity of Things. He was just named a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow. And if that’s not enough to send you running to check out his music, close your eyes while listening to him and you might swear you are hearing Wes or George Benson, or one of the guitar heroes whose shoulders Rodney stands on. But ultimately, his music has its own distinct and identifiable character. You can catch Rodney in performance at Uncle Cheef, along with Will Boulware on Organ, Lonnie Plaxico on bass and Russell Carter on drums. JZ

BEBEL GILBERTO

BROOKLYN OPERA HOUSE / MAY 16

Bebel Gilberto’s parents were both bossa nova music legends. She is living proof that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Her dad, Joao Gilberto and her mother, Miuchi, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim, helped give birth to Bossa Nova music. Both nature and nurture bestowed upon her musical gifts that she has made great use of. Growing up in New York and Rio de Janeiro, Bebel made her professional debut on her mother’s album when she was just seven years old. As she matured into a first-rate vocalist and singer in her own right, she has released a steady stream of albums and has become one of the top selling Brazilian artists in the U.S. Last year, she released an album, Joao, that pays homage to her father. She will perform songs from that album and others at the Brooklyn Opera House on May 16. JZ

EDDIE PALMIERI

BLUE NOTE / MAY 20, 27

For six decades, the 87 year-old Nuyorican pianist/bandleader and NEA Jazz Master Eddie Palmieri, AKA "the Sun of Latin Music,” has been a musical giant in two worlds. He created the two-trombone frontline in the 1960s with his legendary La Perfecta ensembles, and in doing so, became one of the founding fathers of salsa. And his two-fisted approach to the piano translates the pointillistic and protean pianisms of McCoy Tyner and Thelonious Monk into his own profound Afro-Caribbean improvisations. His nearly 50 albums include Azucar pa’ ti Sugar for You, El Sonido Nuevo, Recorded Live at Sing Sing Vol. 1 and his latest recording, Mi Luz Mayor. Come see Eddie on his two-date spring residency, and you’ll hear a master of music at work. EH
