RODNEY JONES

UNCLE CHEEF / MAY 10

Rodney Jones is a guitarist’s guitarist. He has played with a veritable who’s who of jazz legends, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne, Chico Hamilton, Larry Coryell, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter, James Brown – the list goes on. Rodney can play straight ahead, funk, groove, and can improvise using stream of consciousness ideas for a full hour as he does on The Infinity of Things. He was just named a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow. And if that’s not enough to send you running to check out his music, close your eyes while listening to him and you might swear you are hearing Wes or George Benson, or one of the guitar heroes whose shoulders Rodney stands on. But ultimately, his music has its own distinct and identifiable character. You can catch Rodney in performance at Uncle Cheef, along with Will Boulware on Organ, Lonnie Plaxico on bass and Russell Carter on drums. JZ
